Prayer

The Christian understanding of God is that He desires relationship with us and as the One who creates and sustains every created thing in the universe he has already established a deep connection with his creation. Whether they know it or not, every person has God as a caring parent, Jesus Christ as loving brother and the Holy Spirit as the Giver of their life. Prayer is the conscious response to this love of God for us.

Prayer involves themes such as thanksgiving, confession of wrongdoing, adoration and praise of God, asking for God’s intervention on behalf of others. It can be active, something we do as we drive to work or carry out other daily tasks. It can be reflective, where we take time to be aware of an aspect of life, creation or scripture God is drawing our attention to. The prayer of listening is called contemplation. Prayer can be creative, expressed in poetry, paint, sculpture, or handcrafts. It can take place in a spiritual journal, dialoguing back and forth with God and include creative elements such as photography, sketching, and collection of meaningful words and images in scrap-book form. Work can be prayer when it is done selflessly and for God’s glory. Prayer can take place spontaneously through the day or follow a pattern or ‘rule’ following the hours of the day. A form like this is known as The Daily Office or Praying the Divine Hours. Even going for a walk can be prayer when we are conscious we are with God, just as we can walk in silence with a friend.

Our personality preferences influence the kinds of prayer activities we will enjoy, so get to know yourself and don’t worry too much about what others do. Pray as you can, not as you can’t.
