Seeking Community

What is the Church?

The universal church is vast, diverse in expression and rooted firmly throughout history. Its journey hasn’t always been straight or true but it continues to be the instrument that God perseveres with for the sake of the world.

The church is the collective term used for the gathering of people who are centred around the life of Jesus. We often think of church as either the buildings or the services but in fact it is the people – the family – of God where there is room for everyone. We are the church. The church is an organism that grows and changes. Churches are places where people can experience a spirituality that nurtures them, sustains them, and excites them. No two churches are the same and one size does not fit all. Churches are shaped by the people who share in its life and recognise it as their community. Churches also reflect the wider community they find themselves in. Vineyard churches do have things in common that make them part of the same family -things like the importance they give to the Bible and the way they share leadership as well as our shared values.

Finding community within the church is a case of connecting with people not too dissimilar to ourselves that we get to do life with as we earnestly seek to follow Jesus together and make a positive difference in our communities.
